What to Expect at an Eye Examination

Step 6 - Slit Lamp - Examining the Health of Your Eyes

The slit lamp allows the doctor to get a highly magnified image of the structures of the eye to thoroughly evaluate them for signs of infection or disease. During this test you will place your chin on the slit lamp. The doctor will shine the lamp's light at your eye and look through a set of oculars (much like a microscope), first examining the structures of the front of the eye (such as the lids, cornea, conjunctiva and iris). Then, with the help of a special high-powered lens, the doctor will view the inside of your eye, which includes the retina, optic nerve and macula.
